The leading causes of death – such as heart disease, stroke, cancer and diabetes – can be traced to what we eat. Even with a balanced diet, disease and degeneration can occur if the nutrients from the foods we eat are not digested and made available to the body. Enzymes are the driving force in this digestive process. In fact, enzymatic activity is responsible for every biochemical reaction. Life cannot exist without enzymes.

Raw food naturally contains the enzymes necessary to digest itself. However, enzymes are destroyed by temperatures over 118° F. Thus, most methods of cooking and processing leave food devoid of enzymes and place the full burden of digestion on the body.

In essence, eating processed foods robs the body of the energy it needs for growth, maintenance and repair of its tissues and organ systems. Caffeine, alcohol, fevers, pregnancy, stress, exercise, and extreme weather can also cause the body to rapidly lose enzymes. For health and longevity, it is imperative to replenish the enzymes you choose to take out by cooking or processing, or which are lost because of other lifestyle factors.

However, all enzyme supplements are not the same. Digest-a-Meal's unique plant-enzyme formula is designed to work with the body through all three phases of digestion. Plant enzymes work best at body temperature and can withstand the variations in pH which take place during digestion. Animal enzymes only work in the second stage, yet, it is during the first stage -- predigestion -- that the body determines how many enzymes it must produce. If enzyme-rich foods or supplemental enzymes are available for predigestion, the body will need fewer digestive enzymes of its own. This means vital reserves are available for other important metabolic processes.

In phase two, the enzyme pepsin is most effective. However, our Formulation Team knew that the animal-form of pepsin used in many products may produce adverse side effects, even reducing the body's ability to create its own enzymes. Since plant enzymes do not interfere with the body's natural functioning, our team chose to include peptidase, the most potent plant-enzyme form of pepsin, to assist in this phase.

Digest-a-Meal works in the last phase of digestion as well. As an added plus, Digest-a-Meal's colorful ingredient, beet root, helps the body produce and secrete its own digestive juices.

Another factor sets Digest-a-Meal even further above other enzyme supplements. Our formulation contains the full complex of enzymes to completely break foods down to their simplest form, supplying the most nutrition possible from the foods you eat. For example, the enzyme, protease, initiates the digestion of protein, breaking it down to a peptide; but, peptides cannot be used in the body, and can cause more harm than good. We have included the enzyme, peptidase, to change peptides into useable amino acids.

Although Digest-a-Meal has always contained a peptidase enzyme activity, ongoing research has resulted in the recent availability of a new type of peptidase, designated Peptidase FP, which completes this digestive step far more quickly and thoroughly. In addition, Acid-stable Protease is now in the formula to assure that the process of digesting protein is continued at a high rate in the very acid environment of the pyloric (lower) stomach as food passes through that region.

Amylase breaks down carbohydrates into disaccharides, which, like peptides, can cause havoc in the system. Lactase, invertase, and maltase have been added to break disaccharides down into simple, useable sugars. Recently, the enzyme Glucoamylase was added to the formula. This enzyme works together with the other carbohydrate-digesting enzymes to complete the digestion of complex carbohydrates. The completeness of the digestion of carbohydrates - removing all partially digested sugar residues - is not only very important from a nutrition perspective, but is a key factor in correcting food sensitivity reactions.

Fat can be digested with the enzyme lipase. However, to convert fats to useable fatty acids requires specific minerals and co-factors. In fact, for any enzyme activity to occur, certain minerals and co-factors are necessary. If these co-factors are not supplied with an enzyme supplement, the enzyme activity may rob the body's nutrient stores.
