St. John's Wort with CAeDS
St. John's Wort with CAeDS
St. John's Wort is a shrubby perennial plant with bright yellow flowers. It is native to Europe, but now grows in many parts of the world. St. John's Wort got its name from St. John the Baptist. Its flowers are typically in bloom on St. Johns Day (June 24th), the reported day of St. John's beheading. The flower also exudes a red pigment which is said to be associated with the blood of St. John. The Latin name Hypericum perforatum is a derrivation of two Greek words hyper and eikon, which translate to over and icon alluding to the use of St. John's Wort in ancient times for protecting against demonic possession.
The major medical herbalists of ancient times, Hippocrates, Pliny, Dioscorides, Theophrastus and Galen, wrote about the medicinal properties of St. John's Wort. Dioseordes used SJW in the 1st century for sciatica, burns and fever. Hippocrates used SJW to treat many diseases. Folk remedies for the use of SJW include treating wounds, kidney and lung disease, and depression. Currently, St. John's wort outsells conventional antidepressants for the treatment of depression in Germany.

St. John's Wort with CAeDS Technical Information
St. John's Wort (SJW) (Hypericum perforatum) has been widely used as a medicine for thousands of years, but has most recently been used regularly to treat anxiety and depression, a condition that affects about 18 million Americans and is commonly under-treated. Serotonin and norepinephrine -- the chemicals in the brain that affect mood -- are believed to play key roles in depression. Because of this, drugs that inhibit re-uptake of serotonin and norepinephrine are effective in the treatment of major depression. In vitro, SJW inhibits not only serotonin and norepinephrine, but also inhibits dopamine and may have additional unique mechanisms different than known mechanisms of antidepressant drugs. It is believed that the primary active ingredient in SJW is hyperforin. Hyperforin is the major lipophilic chemical constituent of SJW, and is also a potent uptake inhibitor of serotonin, dopamine, noradrenaline, GABA and L-glutamate. For this reason, hyperforin is often used as the primary ingredient in standardized extracts of SJW.
